Mike Evaniuk is living proof that it’s never too late to learn to play the piano. After only 15 months of lessons, he gives a beautiful performance of Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 3. What’s even more remarkable is his method of taking piano lessons. When Mike decided he wanted to take up the piano, he started searching for lessons on YouTube. That’s when he came across a video series called “Clair de lune from Scratch” recorded by our own Hugh Sung. The problem with YouTube lessons, Mike soon discovered, is the fact that the instruction is unidirectional - there’s no real opportunity for students to receive constructive feedback, and students are on their own to figure out if they’re applying what they’re learning correctly. That led Mike to discover Hugh’s online Popular Piano School hosted by ArtistWorks. Through ArtistWorks’ patented Video Exchange Learning System, Mike can post videos of his own playing, and Hugh can respond with personalized videos to give the feedback necessary for piano playing success. What’s more, videos can be posted any time of day from anywhere in the world, without the need to schedule lessons. This made it perfect for Mike to fit his lessons around his busy career as an Information Technology professional. When Mike began his lessons with Hugh, he started with a digital piano. But as he began to make progress with his piano playing, he soon got the “piano bug”, and wanted to upgrade to an acoustic grand piano. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of piano store options around his hometown of Boisie, Idaho. When he reached out to Hugh for advice, Hugh was able to help him find an instrument that matched his musical tastes and budget: a 5’10” Cunningham Parlour Grand. This is what we call “Piano Concierge”, a free personalized service where customers ask us to help them choose the perfect piano, and we arrange to have that piano delivered to them anywhere in the world. Mike aspires to one day become a piano teacher by taking advantage of free college courses for senior citizens and completing his degree in music. He is truly an example showing that it’s never too late to learn what you love and to follow your dreams!
